The Ins and Outs of Green Cleaning Products

January 29, 2021 by maidwhiz

Green cleaning is a specialized type of housekeeping that uses eco-friendly products and supplies in an effort to reduce the negative impact production and use of mainstream cleaning chemicals has on our environment.

But what cleaning products are used in green cleaning? How exactly are these products different from everyday cleaning supplies and what are the benefits of using green cleaning products? Do professional Cliffside Park cleaners use eco-friendly cleaning agents?

Keep reading to learn the answers to these questions.

Are green cleaning products really safe?

Are green cleaning products really safeGreen cleaning products are made using natural, nontoxic, and biodegradable ingredients in an effort to reduce both their harmfulness to people and the amount of environmental pollution their use, manufacture, and packaging produces.

Green cleaning products can either be homemade or commercially produced. Commercially produced items have been shown to be just as effective as their non-green counterparts, while also being made with an increased emphasis on safety.

Since you have complete control over what goes into your homemade green cleaning products, and because all of the items that are used in them are food grade anyway, using homemade solutions is by far the safest and healthiest way to clean your house.

Examples of homemade cleaners include:

  • All-purpose cleaner. Mix 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1/2 cup of vinegar with 1/2 gallon of water. This can be used to remove water deposit stains on bathroom mirrors, windows, chrome fixtures, shower stall panels, etc.
  • Carpet stain remover. Combine equal parts water and white vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray this solution onto a stain and let it sit for a few minutes, then clean with a sponge or a brush with warm, soapy water.
  • Chopping block cleaner. Cut a lemon in two and use a half to rub the surface of the chopping block. In case of an extra stubborn stain, squeeze some of the lemon juice on the problematic spot and let it sit for 10-15 minutes before wiping it off.
  • Oven cleaner. First, moisten the surfaces with a wet sponge. Then mix 1/4 cup water and 3/4 cup baking soda, and spread this thick paste throughout the inside of the oven (but not over openings or bare metal). Leave it overnight and wipe it clean in the morning.
  • Toilet bowl cleaner. Mix a cup of vinegar and 1/4 cup baking soda. Pour this combination into the toilet and leave it for a few minutes. Afterward, scrub the toilet clean with a brush and rinse it out.

How do you tell if a cleaning product is green?

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires all cleaning chemicals sold in the US to have a Safety Data Sheet (SDS). The SDS for a green cleaning product should state that it’s non-hazardous to the environment, not carcinogenic, and not harmful to aquatic animals.

If the SDS also contains numerous safety precautions (eg., how to store the cleaning product properly), there’s a considerable chance the product isn’t green. Finally, check if the packaging is made using recycled or recyclable materials, or if it’s biodegradable.

If you want to go the extra mile, you can also check where the factories are located and how they deal with environmental issues.
