Expert Tips for Cleaning Your Microwave

August 31, 2021 by maidwhiz

Wherever there’s food preparation involved, greasy spills and splatters are simply a run-of-the-mill matter. Kitchen cleaning can be a round-the-clock job and some mishaps can go unnoticed. To turn your microwave into a disaster area, all you need to do is use it twice and not clean in between. So, what’s the easiest way to clean up the mess?

Ideally, you’ll get a professional Fort Lee maid service to handle the job for you. But what when this is not an option? Luckily, most of the time, common household messes such as this one can be sorted out even without professional help. Keep reading to find out how.

How do you clean a really dirty microwave?

When you cook, tiny droplets of grease and oil float in the air and stick to all of your kitchen surfaces. This means that deep cleaning your kitchen appliances doesn’t only imply degreasing them from the inside, but also on the outside. To clean a microwave thoroughly, here’s what you should do:

  • How do you clean a really dirty microwaveUnplug the power cord as a safety precaution and take the opportunity to check it for dirt or damage.
  • Take everything removable out to make harder-to-reach areas more accessible and easier to scrub. This way, you can wash the removable parts separately.
  • Clean the inside of the microwave using a baking soda paste. Mix two parts baking soda and one part water to form the paste, then coat the entire interior of the microwave with it. Let it sit for about five minutes and then wipe it off with a wet washcloth or a sponge. If there are any stains left, spray them with white vinegar and wipe again after they foam. Repeat the process if needed.
  • Clean the outside of the microwave by wiping it with a mixture of water and vinegar to break down the grease. If the surface is only slightly dirty, mix half a tablespoon of vinegar with a cup of water or use two tablespoons of vinegar per cup to cut through tougher grease.

What cleaning products can you use in a microwave?

Most commercial-type degreasers, oven cleaners and even glass cleaners can rid you of typical microwave messes. But they tend to smell bad and, if you don’t rinse the product out completely, it can affect the taste and smell of your food.

To avoid using harsh chemicals and still achieve great results, apart from the method we listed above, you can use steam to loosen up the dried-up grime from the inside of your oven.

There are a few variations to this method, but the basis is the same:

  1. You will need to fill a microwave-safe bowl with water and add either vinegar, lemon juice or dishwashing liquid.
  2. Turn the microwave on and run on high temperature until the water boils and steams.
  3. Once the dirt is loosened, you should be able to wipe everything clean with a wet sponge or cloth.
